ANYA

The variety Anya is now being packed at the Boston site as a Taste The Difference salad potato for Sainsbury's. Anya has been supplied to Sainsbury's for several years but following acquisition of the variety, is now supplied exclusively by Albert Bartlett.
The story goes that the variety was first grown by Sainsbury's gardener in 1995 and liked it so much he suggested it was named Anya after Lady Sainsbury.
The variety was ranged by Sainsbury's some years afterwards and then became part of the Taste The Difference brand. The variety is a cross between Desiree and the lesser known Pink Fir Apple, from which it gets its knobbly appearance. Anya has a distinct nutty flavour and can be enjoyed either hot or cold.
The Bartlett team have already started planning for the 2009 growing season and the first field of Anya has already been planted in at Marazion Cornwall under the watchful eye of Andrew Howseman, Field Manager at Boston.
After assessing the quality of the potatoes in store, the priority for the team this season is to help growers reduce the amount of greens and improve packouts. Andrew Howseman and Paddy Graham Jones already have ideas on how this can be done and will be trialling with growers during the season.
